Premier League – Soccer News Soccer Match Reports, Football News Thu, 12 May 2022 10:15:30 +0000 en-US hourly 1 Pep Guardiola explains what striker adds to City as he takes aim at Man Utd, Liverpool spending Thu, 12 May 2022 10:15:29 +0000 Pep Guardiola has finally broken his silence on the impending Erling Haaland transfer to Manchester City – and insists he will be a top player for the Cityzens for many years to come.

The striker’s agreement over a move to the Etihad was finally confirmed earlier this week, with Aymeric Laporte leading the welcomes. With City meeting his £51m exit clause, Haaland will officially become a City player on July 1, subject of medical checks.

City will hope that Haaland finally helps deliver them the ultimate prize with the Champions League. Guardiola’s men missed out once again this season, having crashed out of the semi-final stage.

But having Haaland in their ranks will surely boost their chances, especially given his formidable goal record. They have lacked something of a focal point in attack ever since Sergio Aguero’s departure last year.

Indeed, the Norway striker has an incredible 85 goals in 88 appearances for Dortmund.

Until now, Guardiola has kept his lips sealed on the prospective deal.

However, with his side closing in on a fourth title in five seasons after Kevin De Bruyne inspired a thumping win at Wolves, Guardiola broke his silence.

“It is a decision for the club to make a good sign for the future. He can come for many, many years hopefully. And I am pretty sure he will adapt perfectly to our team but for next season,” Guardiola told Sky Sports.

Asked if he was excited by the prospect of working with one of the world’s top players, Guardiola insists he will do all he can to help Haaland settle in.

“I’m excited in my job but of course, the players make you a good manager,” he added. “He is an incredible young talent, perfect age. I am pretty sure we are going to help him settle as best possible.”

Guardiola can’t resist pop at rivals following Erling Haaland transfer

The capture of Haaland is yet another huge statement made by Manchester City in the transfer market.

After landing Jack Grealish last summer for a £100m British record fee, the deal for the Norwegian takes his spending at City through the £770m bracket.

However, he is adamant that City always spend within their limits and could not resist a pop at Liverpool…

Tchouameni takes key step towards transfer, as waiting game could benefit Chelsea, Liverpool Wed, 11 May 2022 22:09:04 +0000 Aurelien Tchouameni has made up his mind that he will be leaving Monaco this summer, which may put Chelsea at an advantage over Real Madrid, reports suggest.

Tchouameni has become one of the most in-demand young players ahead of the upcoming transfer window. His form for Monaco over the past couple of seasons has put him in the shop window.

Now a fully-fledged France international, the 22-year-old could be ready for the next challenge in his club career. He has been regularly linked with clubs outside Ligue 1, including most of the Premier League’s so-called big six.

With a takeover of the club looming, Chelsea are back at the forefront of the race to sign Tchouameni. In fact, AS are now claiming that the Blues are “doing the most” in the battle for the midfielder’s services.

The Spanish outlet says so in the wake of interest from La Liga champions Real Madrid. However, Los Blancos would rather make Tchouameni wait a year.

Given his contract is due to expire in 2024, that may help reduce the asking price. Madrid are not keen on meeting the valuation of between €70million (£59.9m) and €80m (£68.4m).

Ideally, they would rather pay somewhere closer to €50m (£42.8m) for the former Bordeaux man.

However, despite being Tchouameni’s number one choice, he may not want to wait a year for Real. Indeed, it is claimed that he has “absolutely” decided to leave Monaco this summer.

Aurelien Tchouameni perfect for Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool evolution

Aurelien Tchouameni is reportedly a summer Liverpool target and he is exactly the sort of player Jurgen Klopp should be going after.

Should Chelsea complete their takeover in time to make transfers – as is now looking likely – they will be back in the hunt for Tchouameni.

They are up against Thomas Tuchel’s former club Paris Saint-Germain for his signature. However, Tchouameni would rather leave France behind for a new experience in the Premier League or La Liga.

Down the former route, it is not just Chelsea who are competing for his services. The report reminds that Liverpool are among the main competitors too.

Tchouameni has recently been…

Billy Gilmour targeted by Rangers as two potential Ibrox exits loom Wed, 11 May 2022 09:49:57 +0000 Chelsea are ready to send Billy Gilmour out on loan again and Rangers are eyeing up a swoop for the Scotland star, TEAMtalk understands.

The 20-year-old is still in the early stages of his career but has already shown exciting promise. Following his Premier League debut under Frank Lampard in August 2019, he has gone from strength to strength.

But amid the wealth of options for Chelsea in midfield, current boss Thomas Tuchel sent Gilmour out on loan to Norwich last summer.

The midfielder will return having made over 25 appearances for the Canaries this summer. However, TEAMtalk has learned that Chelsea do not think he is ready to step up to the first team just yet.

Instead, they are looking at another loan spell for the youngster and Rangers have emerged as an option.

The Gers have enjoyed a fantastic season, with Giovanni van Bronckhorst guiding the club to the Europa League final in his first half-season in charge.

Nevertheless, he anticipates losing some of his squad including midfielder Glen Kamara and winger Ryan Kent.

Rangers are therefore plotting a move to bring Gilmour back to the club and the deal is likely to appeal to the player.

Indeed, Gilmour was a youth player at Ibrox but left for Chelsea in the summer of 2017.

A move north of the border again would give him the chance to make his mark as Van Bronckhorst looks to reshape his squad.

Rangers have already recruited from the Premier League loan market this season. Manchester United winger Amad Diallo has made 10 appearances since moving to Ibrox in January.

Gilmour playing Chelsea waiting game

Gilmour’s breakthrough season in 2019/20 also saw him impress in his first Premier League start in a 4-0 win over Everton in March 2020.

Before that, he formed the bedrock of the Blues’ FA Cup win over league champions-elect Liverpool.

In 2020/21, Lampard gave Gilmour his Champions League debut but he only played a bit-part role throughout the campaign.

And he would struggle for minutes if he returned to Stamford Bridge this summer.

Fellow Chelsea loan star Conor Gallagher has had a fantastic loan spell at Crystal Palace and proven himself ready for a first-team role with the Blues.

Aside from him,…

Ten Hag given lift as striker’s personal advisors make Man Utd feelings clear Tue, 10 May 2022 21:43:20 +0000 Manchester United are growing increasingly confident they can secure the signing of Darwin Nunez this summer, with the striker’s personal advisors seemingly giving the prospective deal a big push forwards.

The Red Devils are preparing for what is likely to be their busiest summer window in some time. With the club failing to perform to expectations, sweeping changes are likely to be made to their squad.

And with Erik ten Hag taking charge in a matter of weeks, plans are already being put in place.

The Dutchman needs to improve all areas of his side. To that end, a report recently suggested that only one position in their squad was safe with up to 12 players likely to depart.

Improvements in defence, midfield and attack are required, though just how much United have to spend is open to debate.

Either way, Ten Hag certainly has his work cut out. The club has leaked a club-record Premier League high of 56 goals this season, meaning defensive improvements are a must.

Ten Hag will also want to improve his midfield. To that end, the Red Devils have been boosted in their pursuit for Frenkie de Jong following a big decision at Barcelona.

But it’s in attack where perhaps the most wholesale changes will be made. The club are expecting to move on Anthony Martial this summer, while Edinson Cavani is also departing on a free transfer.

Doubts also remain over Cristiano Ronaldo and Marcus Rashford. Even if Ronaldo is kept on, at the age of 37 questions remain over how long he has left at the top.

Man Utd given Darwin Nunez advantage

As such, it’s little wonder to see them linked with Benfica hot-shot Nunez. The Uruguayan has been in electric form this season, notching 34 goals in all competitions.

And reports on Monday claimed United were ready to go all out to bring the striker to Old Trafford.

Now those hopes have been handed a signficant lift.

As per the Daily Mirror, they claim Nunez’s personal advisors feel a move to the Premier League, and in particular Manchester United, would be perfect.

The likes of Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid are also reportedly keen. However, the report claims his representatives believe United are the club best suited for the…

Xavi fires away with ‘no doubt’ jibe at Man City coup amid new revelation Tue, 10 May 2022 09:40:49 +0000 Barcelona boss Xavi took a swipe at Erling Haaland when explaining the only reason why he’d join Man City instead of moving to the Camp Nou.

The Norwegian hitman, 21, appears on course to become Manchester City’s next centre-forward. Haaland reportedly completed a medical in Brussels on Monday after being afforded time off by Borussia Dortmund.

Haaland is believed to hold a release clause within his contract worth around £64m pending the exchange rate. However, according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, Man City may in fact be getting the frontman for less than first thought.

Romano tweeted City have told Dortmund they will activate the clause, though claimed it is ‘closer to €60m (£51.4m) than €75m (£64m)’.

Haaland’s potential arrival would coincide with that of Argentine Julian Alvarez. City’s frontline will have a very different look next year with their days of playing a False 9 seemingly over.

Signing Haaland will be a real coup for Pep Guardiola’s side, especially at that price. The likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona were in the mix for the striker who has operated at a goal-per-game in Germany.

Now, speaking ahead of Barcelona’s LaLiga clash with Celta Vigo, Xavi had his say on why Barcelona have lost out.

Xavi in “no doubt” about City transfer

Xavi reiterated his desire to be respectful to both Haaland and City. Though he couldn’t resist taking a cheeky swipe at the player.

In doing so, he insisted he has “no doubt” that the primary reason why Haaland would choose City over Barca is a financial one.

“I will not disrespect other projects,” he said (via the Express).

“We don’t have the only valid project. There are many other successful ones, including City. They have titles and great results and they are great competitors.

“However, in the end, if the move happens, it would be primarily for financial reasons. I have no doubt about that.”

How will Haaland fare at Man City?

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp recently stated signing Haaland would take City to “new levels”. However, recent history would suggest Haaland may take at least one year to adapt.

Indeed, the list of major signings City made that…

Jurgen Klopp responds to Man City Haaland news with upbeat Liverpool message Mon, 09 May 2022 21:39:48 +0000 Jurgen Klopp feels Erling Haaland moving to Manchester City will ‘set new levels’ but has backed Liverpool to keep competing with the champions.

Haaland, 21, has become the hottest property in European football over the past three years. After bagging 29 goals from 27 appearances in all competitions for Austrian club Red Bull Salzburg, he joined Borussia Dortmund in January 2020. It was thought he might move to one of Europe’s biggest clubs but BVB continued their trend of snaring young talent.

The Norway international carried on finding the net with alarming regularity. He scored 16 times from 18 outings in the second half of 2019-2020 and was on target 41 times from as many games last term.

Despite missing many matches through injury this season, the talented youngster has notched 28 goals from 29 appearances. Unsurprisingly, he has been linked with many top clubs.

Real Madrid, Barcelona and Chelsea have all been mentioned in connection with the Scandinavian. But reports claim City have got their man and may even confirm the transfer this week.

And Klopp has now responded to the news that Haaland looks set to grace the Etihad.

“If Erling Haaland goes there, it will not weaken them – definitely not,” he told reporters. “I think it’s been spoken about enough and at the moment it’s a lot of talk about money but this transfer will set new levels, let me say it like that.”

Klopp unfazed by Man City Haaland capture

Manchester City are favourites to defend their Premier League title. Their 5-0 thrashing of Newcastle United opened up a three-point lead over Liverpool with three games to go.

They had one foot in the Champions League final until Real Madrid’s amazing last-gasp heroics saw them eliminated. The north-west outfit remain the benchmark for other teams to reach and Haaland will only make them stronger.

But Klopp preferred to focus on his own side and remains positive about Liverpool’s future.

“I signed a new contract knowing that City will not stop developing. So it’s not about if City keep flying whether we can be happy or not,” he added.

“It’s about us and what we can make of it. We have so many opportunities and so…

Pundit explains reason why ‘lucky’ Thomas Tuchel should have been sacked by Chelsea Mon, 09 May 2022 09:33:03 +0000 Former Aston Villa forward Gabby Agbonlahor feels Thomas Tuchel would have been sacked this season but for the turmoil at Chelsea.

Tuchel, 48, arrived at Stamford Bridge in January 2021, guiding the Blues to the Champions League title. The west Londoners finished fourth in the Premier League sand the hope was they would challenge this term. Chelsea sit third in the table with 67 points to their name.

But, heading into Sunday’s fixtures, Liverpool and Manchester City both have 83. It is no disgrace being 16 points behind the top two, with the Reds and City among the best teams ever to play in the English top flight.

And the Stamford Bridge outfit could still pick up silverware as they face Liverpool in the FA Cup final on May 14. Tuchel’s charges reached the EFL Cup final, losing out to the Merseysiders on penalties.

They were beaten 5-4 on aggregate by finalists Real Madrid in the Champions League quarter-finals. And, with the Uefa Super Cup and Fifa Club World Cup already secured, it has clearly been a decent season.

The last few months have been played under the cloud of Roman Abramovich’s sanctions and uncertainty over the club’s ownership. But Agbonlahor did not spare the rod and believes the German has been saved by the current situation.

“I think that Chelsea have underachieved this season,” he told talkSPORT. “In any other season under Abramovich, Thomas Tuchel would have been sacked for this season’s performance.

“When you look at the quality players that they’ve got and the squad of players that they’ve got; Ziyech, Havertz, Lukaku, Pulisic; they’ve got so many top, top players and if Arsenal win against Leeds then they’re just one point above Arsenal.”

Tuchel fortunate to be at the Bridge

Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola have been roundly praised for the job they have done at Liverpool and Man City respectively.

Tuchel’s name, along with Tottenham’s Antonio Conte, also gets thrown into the mix when talk turns to the Premier League managerial heavyweights.

Third place in the league is by no means guaranteed, with Arsenal closing in. And Agbonlahor feels Chelsea should be closer to the top of the table with the players…

Man City should sign Paul Pogba ‘in a heartbeat’, as Redknapp clashes with Carragher over controversial move Sun, 08 May 2022 21:16:47 +0000 Jamie Redknapp wants to see Paul Pogba making an “incredible” move from Manchester United to Manchester City and even thinks it would be a “no brainer”.

Pogba will be out of contract with Manchester United at the end of the season. It is fair to say his second spell with the club has not gone to plan after what was at the time a world-record transfer in 2016.

Fans and pundits have often been divided about what he is bringing to the team and that remains the case as his time with the club nears its end.

Where he ends up remains up for question, but there have been rumours recently about what would be an extraordinary move – to none other than Manchester City.

The path across the city is not well trodden, but several sources have indicated there is a chance it could happen. It would no doubt cause controversy.

But according to Sky Sports pundit Redknapp, the transfer would “make sense” for everyone concerned.

Redknapp said after Sky‘s coverage of City’s win over Newcastle: “It’d be an incredible move. I think it’d be one that I – have to be honest – wouldn’t have seen coming.

“But you have to weigh it up. Free transfer, he’d have a point to prove, because he’s took a lot of stick while he’s been at United.

“I’ve always watched Pep [Guardiola], he’s been funny. There’s a few times I’ve watched games where United are sitting; he always goes over to him, they have a bit of dialogue. He obviously respects him as a player.

“There was talk a few years ago that he might have gone for him. Now, a player of his quality, no matter what you say about Paul Pogba, as a free transfer – high wages of course, but that’s not a problem for Man City – you would take him in a heartbeat.

“He adds a lot to this team. I think he’d be hungry to come and show what he can do. He lives in the area. I think it’d be an incredible move, it’d be a brave move, but I’d love to see that in the Premier League.

“I think it’d make sense all round.”

However, fellow pundit Jamie Carragher is of the opposite opinion. He responded by arguing Pogba does not have the appropriate work rate to succeed in a Guardiola…

Pep Guardiola to stick with in-form Gabriel Jesus Sun, 08 May 2022 09:14:25 +0000 Following a great run of form, the predicted Manchester City team to face Newcastle United could see Gabriel Jesus awarded yet another start up front.

City came agonisingly close to making it to the Champions League final in midweek. They were just minutes away, before a Rodrygo brace for Real Madrid took it to extra time, where City were beaten.

The first leg saw City overcome Real 4-3 in an absolute goal fest, where four separate City men scored, including Gabriel Jesus.

Between the European games, the Citizens put four goals past Leeds United, and four players found their way to the scoresheet yet again in the victory, with Jesus hitting the back of the net yet again.

Before that, City beat Watford 5-1, with Jesus netting an incredible four goals. The game prior, City won 3-0 against mid-table Brighton.

Guardiola has kept his cards close to his chest regarding his selection for the next game. He did admit that he “didn’t speak” to his players, though.

With Jesus in such good form, it would be a surprise if he was not included from the start again this weekend.

Last time out – Real Madrid 3-1 Man City

Ederson started in net. The full-back positions were occupied by Kyle Walker – who appeared to aggravate a previous injury – and Joao Cancelo.

Ruben Dias played alongside Aymeric Laporte at centre-back – he looked to be struggling with cramp, but Guardiola did not mention his fitness.

Kevin De Bruyne played with Rodri and Bernardo Silva in midfield.

In-form Jesus was flanked by goalscorer Riyad Mahrez and Phil Foden.

Predicted Man City team against Newcastle

Ederson will likely remain in net. Cancelo could move to right-back amid Walker’s injury troubles, with Zinchenko coming in at left-back.

Dias and Laporte could remain in the centre of the defence, should the latter be fit. If not, Stones may return, though there have been question marks over his own fitness.

De Bruyne and Rodri could remain in midfield. Ilkay Gundogan may join them, giving Silva a rest after 120 minutes against Real.

Jesus, following seven goals in his last six games, will likely start in attack. Mahrez could play alongside him, as he was a bright spark in the week….

Liverpool play out entertaining draw with Tottenham as the two teams keep title, top four hopes alive Sat, 07 May 2022 21:12:31 +0000 Luis Diaz’s deflected strike cancelled out Heung-min Son’s goal as Liverpool and Tottenham played out a fascinating 1-1 draw at Anfield.

Liverpool were looking to keep their Premier League title and quadruple hopes alive, while Tottenham were aiming to get ahead of rivals Arsenal in the race for Champions League qualification. The first half went as many would have been expecting.

Liverpool spent most of the 45 minutes in the Tottenham half, with Antonio Conte’s side attempting to catch them on the counter-attack.

Surprisingly, it was Virgil van Dijk who was Liverpool’s biggest threat. The centre-back headed wide from a corner in the 22nd minute but had better aim later on. He rose above Cristian Romero to send an effort goalwards, only to see it hit the crossbar.

A few minutes later, Liverpool pinched the ball from Dejan Kulusevski, allowing Diaz to play a nice one-two with Sadio Mane. Diaz then attempted to bend a shot into the far corner, only for Hugo Lloris to be equal to his effort.

Tottenham went straight up the other end and had a good chance of their own. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg sent a low drive towards Alisson’s goal from far out, and the Brazilian keeper was lucky to see it come back off the post.

Tottenham opened the scoring in the second half. Emerson sent a looping pass up to Harry Kane, who brought it down unchallenged.

Three touches later and the ball was in the back of the Liverpool net, as Kane played into Ryan Sessegnon’s path and he set up Heung-min Son for a simple finish.

Liverpool get level through Diaz

Jurgen Klopp turned to his bench in the 64th minute in search of a response. Kostas Tsimikas and Diogo Jota came on for Andy Robertson and Jordan Henderson respectively.

And the Reds got their equaliser 10 minutes later. Thiago gave the ball to Diaz, and the Colombian cut inside past two players before sending a shot at goal. It took a big deflection off Rodrigo Bentancur to wrong-foot Lloris and send it into the bottom corner.

Both teams probed for a…
